My reason for going there was two-fold – the alluring myth surrounding the Komodo dragons and the rich vegetation that the island had to offer.

I also had a great desire to visit Pink Beach.

It is one of the few beaches that has sand colored between white and reddish colors.

The coral reefs around them are rich and full of life.

How to Get to Komodo Island

Komodo Island Flights

To be honest, the trip to Komodo Island is an adventure trip in itself.

I also chose to travel from Bali to Labuan Bajo which is the nearest island.

Labuan Bajo has a domestic airport known as Komodo International Airport and this is the closest region to the island.

The duration of the flights is around one and a half hours and the flights are relatively many.

There are several options.

I prefer to go on a boat tour from Labuan Bajo so that I may have enough time to visit other islands such as Rinca and Padar.

You may as well hire boats if you are in a crew or would like to enjoy some privacy.

Taking a multi-day boat trip coupled with a visit to this island can be quite something since such a trip is also organized from Bali or Flores.

Walk around Komodo Island

Getting around Komodo Island is quite easy to adapt to the environment.

I had a more in-depth outline of how my activities would take place because I had a map.

Komodo Island Maps tourist guide is bought from the visitor center of the park.

It indicates vital areas like Komodo village, trails located in the national park, and adjacent islands.

If you are on a guided tour, usually the tour guide takes care of navigation issues.

I found it interesting to have a map of the island to understand how it is spread out.

My tour of Komodo Island began at Komodo National Park, where I enjoyed the sights of the famous dragons in their wilderness.

Looking at the age-old carnivores this closely is a trip in itself, as they are lethargic but very big and strong – an interesting combination.

Pink Beach

Afterward, we headed towards the lovely Pink Beach which I must say was one of the best beaches I have ever visited.

The pink color of the sand here is due to the presence of red tiny organisms in the white sand.

It was a great place to lie and sunbathe.

I went snorkeling on this beach as well and this time the view underwater was just as good as above the surface.

The coral reefs were full of fishes of striking colors, sea turtles, and if you are fortunate even manta rays.

Local life

In general, Komodo Island is a protected land and does not have people living in the area.

However, Labuan Bajo and Komodo Village give an idea of how people live.

The Komodo Island population is quite small, and the majority are engaged in tourism.

What fascinated me was how both the sustainable tourism and development of the island could co-exist.

Local communities are instrumental in protecting the wildlife.

They ensure that the dragons and other species survive for years to come.

I was delighted to see how the people are intertwined with nature.

How they partake of the tourism activities while managing to conserve their customs.
